For many businesses entering or growing from Romania and Moldova, communicating effectively with customers, partners, and stakeholders makes obtaining Romanian translations a crucial requirement for success. As an Eastern-most language of the Romance branch of the Indo-European language family, Romanian is the official language of Romania and Moldova, where it is spoken as a first language by almost 30 million people and is the second language of 4 million more people globally. Romania ranks 13th in the world for total number of native speakers of a language, above languages like Dutch, Greek, Czech and Swedish. The largest Romanian-speaking community outside Romania and Moldova is in Vojvodina, Serbia. The Romanian diaspora is also quite large, reaching Australia, numerous former Soviet Union republics and European states, Canada, Israel, and the United States.
Linguistic accuracy, in-depth cultural understanding, subject matter expertise, and localization best practices are all necessary components in ensuring success for any product or service entering the local market. Additionally, high-quality, consistent localization solutions for the Romanian language requires advanced AI translation technology combined with native, in-country linguists for a quick turnaround time.
Romanian Dialects
Modern-day Romanian has four officially recognized dialects, although further varieties exist regionally. All these dialects are mutually intelligible but have clear differences in syntax and phonetics.
- Dacoromanian – The basis of the standard Romanian language that is spoken throughout Romaniaand Moldova by approximately 25 million people. It has several regional variants such as the Wallachian, Moldavian, and Banat dialects which differ in degrees of vowel reduction. The modern literary norm was established based on the Wallachian dialect.
- Aromanian – Spoken in Greece, the republic of North Macedonia, Albania, Bulgaria, Kosovo, and Serbia. It has around 500,000 speakersand It is considered the most divergent dialect and likely split off from early Romanian around 900-1200 AD. Aromanian features borrowings from Greek and uses both the Latin and Greek alphabets.
- Istroromanian – Spoken in Istria. Its speakers are sometimes classified as a distinct ethnic group. Istroromanian may have diverged from Romanian as early as the 10th century AD.
- Megalomanian- Spoken in Northern Greece and Southeastern North Macedonia. It is threatened by rapid language shift towards Greek and Macedonian. Meglenoromanianhas some features not found in Dacoromanian, such as a definite article and different plural morphemes. Its origins are linked to Aromanian.
