Chemical Safety Report (CSR) Translations
Ensuring chemicals meet EU requirements for multilingual chemical safety report submissions with CSA/CSR translations
Chemical safety report (CSR) translations are a key component to meeting regulatory requirements for the European Union. For makers of chemicals and the vast array of products that require the use of chemicals, entering the European market presents some of the strictest regulatory requirements of any region worldwide. Among these, chemical safety reports (CSRs) are a mandatory documentation requirement of Europe’s 2006 REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals) policy, that must be submitted alongside a technical dossier in the language of each EU country where a chemical product will be marketed.
CSR translations serve as a key form of documentation for chemical safety assessments (CSAs), which must be conducted for any chemical substance exported to the EU in quantities over 10 metric tons annually. These requirements apply not only to chemicals suppliers but also to downstream purchasers of chemical substances whose intended use of any such substance is not provided for under a previous manufacturer’s CSA.
Key components of the chemical safety report include:
- Human health hazard assessment
- PBT (persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic) assessment
- vPvB (very persistent and very bioaccumulative) assessment
- Environmental hazard assessment
- Physicochemical properties assessment
To help guide the CSA and CSR submission process, the European Chemicals Agency has developed an application called Chesar (Chemical Safety Assessment and Reporting tool). However, as manufacturers must submit copies of their CSRs in the languages of all of their target markets, multilingual translation is an irreplaceable step in the regulatory approval process, requiring the support of linguists with a specialization in chemical translations and a working knowledge of Europe’s chemical regulations.
With a 10,000-strong global network of linguists encompassing all of Europe’s national languages and native, in-country linguists and subject matter experts with a minimum of 7 years’ experience in their fields, CSOFT can provide accurate CSR translations meeting Europe’s rigorous regulatory requirements for chemical substances. Our technology-driven translation management processes help ensure the quality and consistency of your content across languages while improving efficiency, reducing costs and time to market.
Technology-Driven Translation
Technology is essential to the modern localization process. From the moment source content is authored, validated, and prepared for translation, to when translated content is reviewed, edited, and distributed, technology is a fundamental tool for developing accurate and consistent translations. Technologies such as content management systems (CMS), translation management systems (TMS), translation memory (TM), machine translation (MT), terminology management, and project workflow management are all key tools in the localization industry, helping to safeguard quality assurance and ensure the efficiency of and optimization during translation projects. These advantages are especially beneficial when ensuring the accuracy of regulatory documents that must be fully and consistently localized into multiple target languages.
