Q: What is controlled English?

Controlled or standard technical English refers to the practice of using standard and simplified descriptions to explain a topic or concept consistently throughout documentation. There aremany important benefits of using controlled English in the technical writing field because it dramatically increases the efficiency of downstream localization. Using this practice improves readability, maintains consistency of format and reduces word counts, thus improving overall quality and reducing translation costs.
Controlled English also allows multiple writers to collaborate efficiently by utilizing a content management system (CMS.)

Q: How long does it take to translate a document?

A good technical translator can translate about 2,000 words per day. An editor can proofread about 4,000 words per day. Desktop Publishing (formatting) can take a few hours - or many days. Every translation project is unique and timeframe will vary based on many factors.

Q: What is localization? How does it differ from translation?

Localization (or L10N), is the process of adapting a product or content to a specific locale. Translation is one of several services that form the localization process. Language localization is the process of adapting a product that has been previously translated to a specific country or region. In essence, localization is the process of preparing a product, service or brand for a specific language, culture and local market. Translation is just one component of this process.

Q: What is a translation style guide?

A translation style guide is set of instructions that your translators abide by when they translate your content. Typically they include information like if product names should be translated or left in English, preferred international currency, number and date formats, and ways to handle acronyms/abbreviations, and capital/lowercase letter conventions, etc.
